These developments have led to more powerful microfluidic devices but, at the same time, present significant challenges for designers: precise dimensioning, placing, and routing of components and channels, accurate injection of samples and chemicals, as well as timely initiation of processes such as mixing, heating, or incubation.
","
Overall, designing microfluidic devices today involves complexities akin to those in conventional circuit and system design. Yet, designers of these devices lack access to the advanced design tools that are standard in conventional circuit and system design, often resorting to manual, intricate, and time-consuming methods. Obviously, the design automation community has the perfect background and expertise to address these needs. In fact, over the past 1-2 decades, significant contributions have been made in developing methods and tools for the automatic design of microfluidic systems. Yet, despite these efforts and the potential they hold, the influence of design automation in the design of microfluidic devices remains underutilized. A major reason for this unfortunate situation is that many of these tools have addressed the wrong problems, ignored underlying physical and practical needs, or lacked user-friendly interfaces, making them either not useful or too complicated for non-design-automation experts. This is also due to a lack of communication and collaboration between the design automation and microfluidic fields, resulting in tools and methods that have not been established in the microfluidics community. This special session aims to overcome the current disconnect by bringing together experts from both fields and bridging advanced design automation with practical microfluidic applications. To this end, we have secured speakers covering the full spectrum: a microfluidics expert who will provide insights into the tasks and challenges of designing microfluidic devices (using organ-on-chip systems as an example), developers behind a publicly available software framework that introduces design automation for microfluidic devices while considering the actual demands and design guidelines from microfluidics experts, and a design automation expert who has successfully realized a general-purpose Lab-on-Chip by properly adapting design automation tools. Together, they will offer a comprehensive introduction and review of the full spectrum of needs and currently available solutions – from the initial specification of a microfluidic device, through tool development, to fabrication and testing. The talks will be followed by an extensive Q&A/panel session with the speakers and the audience to initiate a discussion on how design automation and microfluidics can collaborate to establish effective design automation for microfluidics. These systems can have profound impact in Scientific Computing applications, being them sensing applications that require low latency processing or modeling and simulation. In this special session, we plan to discuss the challenges, needs, and opportunities to realize the necessary co-design stack that will make neuromorphic computing effective for scientific problems. We will discuss exemplar scientific computing applications, promising neuromorphic primitives that could enable mapping such broad set of applications, the analog computing aspects underpinning the realization of such neuromorphic primitives, and highlight the necessity of testbed to drive the development of such systems.
","2025-06-10T18:59:56.851Z","2025-06-10T18:59:58.678Z","2025-06-10T18:59:58.674Z","80",[],"-51
{},1778852556750]
